How to play Seams

Fill the grid so every touching edge matches by color, by number, or by adding to 10. Rules, weekday sizes and tips for Seams, a free daily tile puzzle.

Seams is a free daily edge-matching puzzle. You drag square tiles from a tray into a small grid. Everywhere two tiles touch, the facing sides have to match.

How do you play Seams?

  1. A few tiles are already pinned to the board. They show a small lock and can't move.
  2. Slide the tray sideways to find a tile, then drag it up onto an empty square. You can also tap a tile, then tap a square.
  3. Where two tiles touch, the facing sides must share a color, share a number, or have numbers that add up to 10.
  4. A red line marks any seam that doesn't match. Drag that tile back to the tray or on to a different square.
  5. Fill every square with no red lines left and you're done. A ripple of light runs across the board.

Every tile in the tray belongs on the board. There are no spares, and tiles never rotate.

What counts as a matching seam?

Each tile has four sides. Each side is a colored triangle (yellow, blue, purple or green) with a number from 1 to 9. A seam is the line where two tiles meet, and it matches if the two facing sides pass any one of three tests.

Take a blue 3 on the right edge of one tile. Here's what the tile beside it could show on its left edge:

Only seams between two tiles count. The outer edges of the board can show anything.

The sum-of-10 rule is the one people miss. A 1 pairs with a 9, a 2 with an 8, and so on. When nothing seems to fit, check the sums.

How does Seams change through the week?

The weekday sets the board size and how many tiles start pinned in place. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday are 3 by 3, with 3, 2 and 1 pinned tiles. Thursday is 3 wide and 4 tall, with 3 pinned. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are 3 by 4, with 2 pinned.

On the 3 by 4 days, two of the pinned tiles sit in a line with one empty square between them. That middle square is a good place to start. Within each board size, fewer pinned tiles means more looking ahead before a tile is certain. Sunday needs the most.

Can every puzzle be solved without guessing?

Yes. Every puzzle is checked before it goes out. It has exactly one solution, and you can reach it by reasoning from the pinned tiles, one sure placement at a time. If you're guessing, there's a clue you haven't spotted yet.

Tips for solving cleanly

Hint and Undo

Hint works in two steps. If any tile you placed is in the wrong square, it flags those tiles in red. If everything you've placed is right, it pins a correct tile in place for you. Hints are counted and shown on your results.

Undo takes back your last move. On a computer, Ctrl+Z or Cmd+Z works too. A tile pinned by a hint stays pinned.

How is Seams scored?

A timer runs while you solve, and your solve time is your score. Signed-in players get a daily leaderboard ranked by time, with fewer hints breaking ties, plus a friends-only board. Solving on days in a row builds your streak.

How do you share your result?
